About Our Lessons

• English style horseback riding lessons offered year round.
• Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
• Children (age 7 or older) to adult.
• Sign up for weekly group lessons, or schedule a semi-private or private lesson.

Our lessons build a rider's skill level and understanding of the horse. An assessment may be required to place the rider in a lesson that will provide challenges and opportunities for success. (Of course, the assessment is free.)

Riders are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the lesson in order to groom and prepare ("tack up") their horses. Staff assistance is provided to beginners. Riders should allow at least 30 minutes upon completion of the lesson for removing, cleaning, and storing tack, and returning the horses to their stalls. Most riders enjoy this pre- and post-lesson time to further bond with their horses.

Riding Requirements

For comfort as well as for safety, we require that all riders wear long pants and a boot with a 1/2 inch heel that has a smooth sole. Approved riding helmets are also an essential requirement; bicycle helmets are not acceptable. Riders who do not have their own helmets may borrow a helmet from Harrogate Hills for the duration of the lesson. For optimum comfort and fit, riders taking lessons on an regular basis are encouraged to purchase their own approved riding helmets from a reputable tack shop.

Weekly riding lessons are provided to enhance the skill level of the rider and improve the students understanding of the nature of the horse. Theory is incorporated into each hour long lesson to help compliment and augment the acquisition of riding skills. Lessons are billed monthly in advance. Payment is due by the first lesson of the month.

For missed lessons, one makeup per month is possible. The makeup sheet must be completed and handed in. Two weeks notice is required for cessation of lessons. Lessons that may be scheduled for the statutory holidays are optional. These include: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day. Join with a friend for a 45 minute semi-private lesson. Payment is due on the day of the instruction. Lessons are held during the day Sunday to Friday at the convenience of the rider.

A rider who desires more intensive instruction can book a 45 minute private lesson. Payment is due on the day of the instruction. Lessons are held during the day Sunday to Friday at the convenience of the rider.

Practice Rides

Subject to instructor discretion, experienced riders who take lessons regularly at Harrogate Hills may book practice rides on school horses. If you are interested in this option, please talk it over with your Harrogate Hills instructor. Practice rides must be booked in advance.
