i believe nick has jumped whisper and melissa nick janit and kristen have ridden her in lessons.

has anyone jumped whisper yet?? and has anyone ridden her in a lesson?? and is anyone jumping her in the pictures?

so then will she become a school horse?? and for what levels??

Actually, she is not that spooky and is just settling in to the new noises and distractions of a new arena.
She is a soft, lovely horse and I think people will really enjoy riding her.

i dont think whisper will become a school horse right away since from the looks of it she seems pretty spooky and she will probably need to be ridden by more confident riders but i am just guessing and i really dont know her as well as some people do.

Hi Chelsea
I am glad you found a place for your horse. If you have someone you trust to trailer your horse it should be just fine. Most horses will walk right on a large stock trailer and she probably has shipped around in her previous life so I am sure she will be fine.
Make sure you do her legs up and if you are worried how she might travel you might want to put bell boots on her front and back feet so she doesn't step on herself. If you have shipping boots, make sure they are on securely because nothing is worse than having a nervous horse suddenly feel shipping boots slipping down their legs. We use a head protector for the horses too. If you want to borrow one of ours, feel free to come by to the farm and we can lend it to you. I attach the head protector to a regular cavesson nose band and then put the horse's head collar (halter) over top of the noseband.
Depending on the weather, make sure your horse is not too cold or too hot in the trailer.

Hi Pat. I found a new barn for my horse, and I'm moving her on Saturday. I've never moved a horse before, so I don't really know what to expect. Can you give me some tips? I know my instructors will help me, but can't horses get sick from the stress and stuff? And also, I know my horse used to race, so she must have been transported around, but I'm not sure if she's good in trailers. What do I do if she doesn't want to get in the trailer? (It's a stock trailer by the way, so it's quite big) I'm really nervous about moving her because I'm scared that something's going to happen. Thanks:)

Yes, Shoshana is coming back for 3 months starting in January.
Also, Whisper arrived today (Sunday) and is settling in nicely between Cirrus and Heather.
Tomorrow will be her first day in the field. Wish her luck!

I was on horse lovers chat and someone told me that we are getting either this month or the beginning of next.
Her name is Whisper and she is a 10 year old Anglo Arab, bay with a white mark on her forehead. I'm soooooo excited

I don't think I would put her as a school horse. She's kind of a one person horse:S its kind of hard to explain. When i ride her, shes always good, but my friends have tried riding her and she always tries and bucks them off. so i dont think i would make her a school horse

try to sit really tall and have lots of heals..if he trys taking oof again and throws you onto his neck.. just try to sit up and lean back. Hopefully you will be able to stop him.. also talk to him and tell him he's a good boy so that he will relax..try not to be nervous..hope you lesson goes well tonight! i was just wondering..do you have to ride Tisco every lesson or can your ride a different horse? Many ask if someone would trade with you.. and tell your instructor how you feel. Maybe if she knows your not comfortable or ready to ride him.. she'll let you ride someone else until you feel more confindent! Hope this helps! Byee

i do not ride at this barn but i need some help with my riding. at my barn i ride a fairly small horse who is a bit easy to ride named Joltz but a little while ago he suffered an injury and i was swiched to a larger much harder horse named Tisko (pronounced lik disco but with a t). i didnt mind a challange at first but in our second lesson Tisko went insaine and i just barely managed to stay on. our second ride was the same and our third aswell. then finally on our fourth he spooked at a lady walking by on the other side on the arena and went crazy throwing me onto his neckthen he took off and i started slidding i was getting closer to the grown when i stopped him but right after he was standing still and my instructer was running over to save me i slipped off and landed on the ground. i would lik to know wat i should do to prevent him from throwing me onto his neck or even the ground. im still a bit shaky but i have to get over it in my lesson tonight. ill let every1 know how it goes

Thanks for the question about Devon.He is doing very well.He has gone out on a lease with someone so he will be ridden because i hurt my back and cant ride till about February.He misses everyone especially Sunny!But he has made a new friend named Chief and he looks just like him!Devon will hopefully come back in a little while,Untill then I will be sure to visit Pat and everyone else!

who have u been riding lately?? tobias is a great horse to ride but you have to make sure you are ready for him.
but if you do ride him have fun!

tobias is such a good horse.. the only thing you have to worry about is keeping his head up or he'll trip! and you also have to keep him moving forward. He is very comfy ..just like a couch! you should try ride him he is very good and listens to you well.

I guess you could describe it as arthritis in the navicular bone. That bone is in the horse's foot.
By the way, I made a mistake in typing before..it is Navicular Disease not Diseases.
Murdoch seems okay just not sound enough to ride. He is enjoying his vacation/retirement so not to worry. :-)

dont u meanu almost had the same problem as the other girl

i almost have the same problem as that girl on horselovers chat. two nights ago in my riding lesson i was riding a cRaZy horse named spencer. i was really nervous to ride him and i guess he senced that becuz when i cantered him up to a jump he refuzed so i turned him around to face it again and pushed him into a canter. but he got excited and took off towards the jump and refused it and sent me flying onto his neck but i had both my stirrups still. i could loose them easily and that was wat my instructor was tellin me to do but i have never fallen off before and i didnt really want to just jump off so i stayed on his neck clinging for dear life as spencer took off around the track. soon he started bucking and i started slipping and finally lost my stirrups. and soon after fell off.

no zahra is on atticus and yes miranda is on cash and melissa is on pete and kandice is on eddie!!

Thanks, I made an account on that site. I don't think my horse is sore, she seems fine, and my instructor said that he doesn't think she is sick because she acts normally in the field, she eats normally, and she has normal bowel movements and I'm not sure if there is someone who can check if her tack fits her properly, but I'm going to look into it. Thanks!

It sounds to me like your horse might be sore somewhere. Is there someone in your area that could check to see if her tack fits correctly?

Thanks for replying Brianna..but you aren't supposed to give a horse treats unless they did something that they need to be rewarded for, because if you give them treats for mis-behaving then they think that what they are doing is good, because u rewarded them. And I don't pay more attention to any other horse, except for my own, so I don't think it's that:S

My cat (I know very different from a horse but still)once got annoyed with me for giving my other pet more attention for a bit. What I did was give her more attention and give her lots of treats. Even if it dosn't seem to make a differece at least she'll know that you love her and you arn't mad at her for being upset. That's just what I'd do.

Hi, my friend told me to come to this website for advice. My horse, named Beauty, was a really good horse, she co-operated with me and i hardly had to squeeze her to get her to speed up, or change gaits. A couple of weeks ago, she started to put her ears flat back when i gave her a little squeeze to trot, and I thought it was just because she was in heat. The next week, I rode her again, and it was the same thing. I don't know what's wrong with my horse, but she's just not listening to me anymore. We had a really good bond before, she recognized me, and always behaved when I rode her, and didn't really like other people on her back. Can someone please give me some advice, or give me some ideas on what it could be, or what I should do. Thanks!

A.T, I was wonderinghow many times you have ridden the horse that you on? Im not a student of Harrogate Hills, but was many years ago, I like the way they have there program set up. I would go to my lesson and didn't know who I would be riding, but that was the whole fun of it one week I would have a easy horse then the next I would have to work so hard cause the horse was giving me such a problem. After a while I could ride any horse, cause Harrogate tought me about riding ALL different kinds of horses. Have a great summer, and A.T don't give up, stick with the horse you have cause you will see how she/he will make you a great rider.

Hey Pat Thanks for the fast response. Harrogate had some of the best shows, It seems like it was a long time ago. I alway had a great time showing with you guys. Harrogate was was like one of the first shows I would go to with BOOTS, Then with KANDY. I have a new horse named Faith, she used to show eventing but I am trying her out as a hunter.

Hey Sara..yah i saw her..well there were 2 alannas:S....one of them rode dezi and the other rode harley or star or somethin...cant remember lol..but yah liz told me that alanna used 2 ride..and i think i remember her...but then after Shandy died she just stopped riding..and she just started again...umm...i dont know if azure will be able to be ridden because as far as i know her foot was really sore..but who knows? lol..u should call deiter and ask him if azure is ridable..and if not im sure that she will be okay the week after...and what info did she get from liz?:S

Unfortunatly Alicia cannot come to camp anymore because she is going to Winnipeg for a memorial for her grandad. I am still trying to figure out when I can come (my mom is going to be in her classroom preparing for next year for a lot of the summer) but WOW!!! I love the new pictures! Devon has had some time off because he hurt his leg.He is doing much better now especially since Pat moved him to the 'outside' stalls.I've been doing alot of ground work with him since he is a bundle of energy right now haveing had such a nice vacation.I am planning on getting back on him tomorrow.Cross your fingers for me!

We were having a lot of problems with guestbook entries being made by automated computer programs. These comments looked real, but you could tell they were written by computer programs because they were all entered at exactly the same time, and real people can't type that fast. The reason for the question about the horses in the square is to make it more difficult for computer programs to sign the guestbook (the programs don't have eyes to "see" the square the way people do, so it's harder for them to get the right answer). I apologize for the inconvenience to our visitors, but I am hoping that it will cut down on the number of illegitimate entries.

We were all sad about Dan's passing too but he had a good life and was well loved.

Sorry that I didn't check messages the last few days. Practice rides are available every other Friday and on PA days or holidays. If you are riding at the right level and are interested, just contact the farm. We can ususally work something out.

Every body did a good job at the "pause a while" show last sunday. Sarah, Heather and I went to the show.
Sarah recieved a 5th, 6th and 2nd place ribbons
Heather rode extreamly well considering it was eddie:S !
And i got two 3rds and a 5th

danaman was a great horse one of the best i ever rode we was gentle and had a great personality. this horse will be a very hard one to forget. if you made a mistake he would keep on going he helped you learn from your mistakes and for that i say thank you dan, thank you for helpin me learn fomr my mistakes thank you for being there to pat your neck and give you carrots wen i was bored, thanks you for being such a great horse and wonderful memory at harrogate hills and thank you for makin harrogate hills complete. we will never forget you!!!!

poor dan!!i remember all the times we have shared together!! he was a great horse and he will be missed by all!! everytime i go 2 bring in his field i will always remember him! to his owner: u were so lucky to have such a wonderful caring, gentle horse like dan!! he will not be forgotten easily umung the student! everyone who rode him fell in love with him, that is for sure.

I was very sad to find out that Dan had to be put down. He was a great horse who taught many people how to ride and would not get mad if they made any mistakes. He will be missed greatly. R.I.P Dan

Regarding Dan......

Sorry for the sad news. Dan was euthanized on Friday, May 5 2006
due to the infirmities of old age. He was not in any pain as far as we could tell but he was becoming increasingly unstable especially on his hind legs. The decision was made by his owner (and both the vet and I agreed it was the right decision) to put him down before he got to the point where he would fall and hurt himself or be unable to get up.
He was a grand, classy horse and we all miss him very much.

Jack is fine.. we've just moved him to a place where there is a little more opportunity to hack. He's missing Harrogate right now but he's making some new friends as we speak =) We had to leave in a bit of a hurry yesterday so we didn't really have a chance to say a proper goodbye to everyone, but you will still see my mom and I around the barn (we'd miss Pat and the horses too much if we didn't come back to visit often =) ) so we'll keep you posted.

Grandpa is indeed the horse behind Cirrus in the new picture. He is often ridden in the same lesson as Cirrus and I on Tuesday nights. :)

Hi I'm one of Chelsea's friends but I rode at the Harrogate during the summer and plan on doing it again :) For volunteer hours if you want to work with horses then you should see if you can volounteer at card, I'm not sure how old you have to be but there is a link from the other links under additional info on this site. That way you would get to work with horses and help kids and thats what I'm planning on doing. Plus I'm pretty sure most schools (my mom informed me on this cause she is a teacher and knows all this stuff) let you work there because it is like a charitible thing and such. Just to be sure ask your teacher though! Good luck!

hi to everybody at HH at a barn i used to ride at therewere 5 horses & 1 pony.the pony was used for riding at a school but was retired around age 28his name is diablo one of the horses was used as a show horse but now rarely gets ridden her name is breezy then there's jay & sabby who cant be showed because of injurys thet have left them a bit abnormal but the REALLY sad part is that 2 green perfectly good horses are retired before any thing has even started for them. i can imagine one, her name is friendly in the show ring she is by far the prettyest horse there and i can imagine LaLa as a verry calm and friendly school horse i totally wish they could be mine ... but hay is for horses and i'll get one when i become rich!!! :) LOL bye!

Now about Grandpa...we are introducing him to the school slowly. He had a very different life before he came to us so we want to make sure that all his first experiences are good ones. Melissa has a very strong position and good hands which is why I chose to have her ride him on Saturdays to begin with. He is quite a lovely horse to ride and more people will get to ride him as time goes on. If you ask Melissa I think she would tell you that he is actually a little on the lazy side!

Heather, (Hailey's favourite!) doesn't have anything to prove to anyone. At her age, we don't demand that she jump anything too big as she has worked hard teaching people to ride all her life and now she can take it a bit easy.
Remember, someone much wiser than me once said "It is not hard to jump HIGHER. It is hard to jump BETTER!"
As far as your friend goes ( the one who wants to ride a 'hard' horse), she should talk to her instructor or coach. A 'hard' horse means different things to different people. A challenge is good but being over faced can just be dangerous.

I would like to congratulate Pat on the recent ownership of the newest member to the Harrogate Hills family - GRANDPA!
He is a great addition and has a lot to offer all those who get a chance to ride him.

i need some advice for a friend. my friend was ridin her fav horse and the horse freeked out shying away from the back of her barn door and bucked and my friend fell off but didnt get back on. im worried she will never ride that horse again! wat should she do??

oh yes, and how is ben? last i remember he was three months stall rest r something?? will he be better soon?? poor guy! has he been tested 2 see if he is able 2 do some work or does he have another month r so in a stall? is little cheyanne privatly owned?? people r saying she is leaving us at harrogate in the spring?????

just wondering when the newsletter will b coming out?? they have such wonderfull articles in them and if i am right the students are able to do entrys!!?? well all the better reason 2 read!!! oh and i was just wondering how grandpa is doin in lessons! who has been riding him?? goodbye everyone and hopefully see you very soon

Brianna - That year Christmas Eve was on a Saturday and I had my lessons on Saturdays. My parents took me to the barn that day when I went to get Glory to tack up she had a big red bow on her halter. I was a little confused, so my mom told me to go look in Glory's stocking. So I did, and I found a stall name plate with Glory's name and my name as her owner on it. I don't think any surprize can top getting her for Christmas that year :)

To the person who asked where I bought my horses from.

I used to ride at another farm orginally and I part-boarded Glory off of them for 6months. Then my parents surprized me and bought her for me for Christmas that year. I've owned her for just over 11years now.

Cirrus I found off of an ad posted on the internet. Her owner was selling her because she was going back to school and couldn't afford to keep her anymore. Cirrus was bred at a farm in Huntsville.

Glory will be 18years old on April 5th, so wish her a happy birthday if you see her that week ;)

She was retired because she unfortunatly got a type of arthritis in one of her feet that made it uncomfortable for her to be ridden. Each horse is different though, some go on to be ridden well into their 30's!

Cirrus is still very green under saddle. The only thing that makes her hard to ride is the fact that she doesn't know very much yet. Is is also afriad of the pidgeons in the arena, which can make some of our rides interesting :)

how do you know when to retire your horse?

how old is glory? Is cirrus hard to ride?

I am very lucky that my parents help me with my two horses, it's very expensive!

Glory had to be retired from being ridden, which is one of the reasons I bought Cirrus.

I just really wanted to say thank you Harrogate Hills! You turned a liking of horses in to an obbsession with them (in the best meaning of the word) I think about them every day! This really is a great place and if people are thinking they might like to try Harrogate a warn you, you're guaranteed to get hooked!

I think I did the math right. I wish I had a horse but it's way too expensive right now since we have 2 guys in university and everything else. Not to mention I would probably have to ride for another like 4 years ti'll my mom would even consider it. Lol until then I guess I'll just have to dream, and ride yours of course lol

I just wanted to make a post to thank the girls that I rode with the past two Monday nights before the lessons for being very considerate and thoughtful riders.

I haven't ridden Cirrus with other horses working around us very much, so she was a little distracted at some points. But having you call your circles and direction changes helped a lot!

I also appreicated the thought to ask if Cirrus would be okay alone in the arena once you guys were all finished.

So thanks girls! You who you are I hope ;)

Hah yah im riding again..but I feel like I haven't even missed 10 months..I'm riding just like I used to..and yah we got a new pony..but i forget the name...and Deiter is looking after the foal for a while..he doesnt have a name though, so we just call her Baby. Hah it was funny, Maggie was chasing the foal, and the foal was cantering..it was very cute. So yah, I'm not sure who the foal belongs to, but I know it's not Deiter..and I think its 5-6 months old..oh and I dont know if you heard, but Courteny left...(the girl who owns Blue)..her and Blue moved to another farm..somewhere in Barrie..So good luck at your farm..I hope to see you soon! to the RUDE DUDE who said HH horses suck and are always dieing ??? where did you get that idea??? since ive known of harrogate only 3 horses died Blue and pal (from old age) and robbie from a broken ankle (i think) the horses at harrogate kinda need to be old if you think about it because they'll be getting beginners all the time and you can't put a young horse and a beginner togeather and expect them to make some progress so the horses at HH need to have alot of experience and exsperience takes years to get and alot of horses life span is about 30 years so HA (i bet you diddn't know that!!!)

HI EVERYONE!!!
I was reading through the guest book and though I have only been to camp there once it only takes a tiny amount of time to realize how great the barn is! The person or people who said that it sucks and that all the horses were way of track. Anyone who has been to the barn knows how much everyone cares about them and how well they are treated. You are entitled to your own opinion of course but why would you dis something when you hadn't even been there?

On a lighter note I am glad to see most of the horses are doing well. I hope Cheyanne, Omby and every other horse that got hurt is doing well! HI TO JACK, SCOUT, OMBY AND ZOOM ESPECIALLY!

not every barn has shows where u invite other people. and we do learn by compiting against the people at our barn!! some students at our barn go to away shows and do VERY well!!!! and u dont have to compite against diferent people at shows!! most away shows invite the same people all the time!!!

Thanks for saying Harrogate "rox" but let's not say that other people "suck". They are after all entitled to their opinion. We all know that the horses at Harrogate are cared for and that is all that matters.
The electives today were a lot of fun. Windfield Junior High School has been coming to the farm for 18 years and it was fun to see the same teachers again. The kids that came today did very well. Some of them had never ridden before and one group included a girl who had her own horse.
Thanks to everyone who helped today! We really appreciated it.

School horses at Harrogate Hills are kept at the farm long after their ability to work. They are retired here and given a good home for the rest of their lives. After 20 years, yes, we have had horses that have died. George, for example, passed away in December. He was close to 30 years old. Omby is almost 24 and she will always live here whether or not she can be ridden. Cheyanne who slipped on the ice is fine. She also is 23. I am glad that you are pleased with the place where you ride but I think that your opinion that horses get sick and die at Harrogate is a little misplaced.

Windfield Junior High School is coming for their elective day this Wednesday.

Patrick has been laid off for a number of weeks and so at the present time one would probably need to be a level 4 or 5 to ride him. Once he is back in regular work he is not so complicated. He is just a bit enthusiastic!

As far as Pete goes, he is not too hard. One of the great things about Pete is that you will know straight away when you get it 'right'. He is not scary if you get it wrong...just a little cheeky!

willie is good in trot but he gets excited in canter and kicks, tobias is strong but alot of ppl ride him and say its not hard, sadie is kinda difficult, murdoch looks like it might be alittle difficult, but radley, i say someone ride him in a practice ride and he kept moving backwards and not moving and got spooked alot!!

I wish I could take lessons but my mom says its to far to drive up once a week and I can't at Sunnybrook (it's closest to me) because it's really epensive. I guess I'll just have too convince her! Harrogate is such a great place! Before camp I liked horses but now I am totally obssesed! I am being totally honest when I say that not a single day goes by without me thinkoing of horses harrogate and especially Jack, Scout, Atticus and Zoom the horses who truly got me addicted! Hi Sara:
Ring bone is a term used to describe new bone growth between the fetlock and the hoof (more or less). These arthritic changes can make the horse lame. A good farrier (blacksmith) can sometimes extend the working life of a horse with ringbone but once they have it, they will always have it. Sometimes you will hear people refer to it as "high" or "low" ringbone and that is generally so that you can identify where the bony growth has occured.

Thanks for your concern about Benedict. It is not actually his foot that he hurt. He ruptured his peroneus tertius which is a ligament in his hind leg. He will be okay but needs to stay in his stall for 1-3 months. He enjoys visits and carrots so if you are in the neighbourhood, drop by.

and maggie(she's so pretty)im riding at a privet farm U KNOWTHE KIND WITH COWS!!!! the horses that i ride are OK but i really miss azour and magic :(. ive got a broken toe from being stepped on by the horse i ride BREEZY who turnes out to be verry pushy. she only gets ridden once or twice a week so she's ALWAYS hyper and for the verry first time I FELL OFF!!! i tried to canter her and diddn't realize she was so strong! she pulled her head down and gave a little buck , i forgot horses have hair to hold onto so i fell and got a beeding lip!
anyway i'd love to come back and visit innisfree but i don't thinh i'll be able to start riding there again
